Gravity and Grace

Even at this very moment, action, work, love, thought, the search for truth and beauty are creating certain realities which transcend the transitory nature of the individual. And the fact that this assertion has become trivial, that it has been put to use too often – sometimes to worst kind of ends – does not mean that it has stopped being true.
Henri Lefèbvre, Critique of Everyday Life [1947]

According to Lefèbvre1, it’s up to the contemporary beings of each time to endeavour to take
the next step, to aspire to what is not yet realized, to what is to come. These are beings who are
dissatisfied with their contemporary condition [which they do not, however, reject], but that in a
more or less conscious way, still spill over their daily experience of that condition, contingent, a
desire of surpassing, of criticism and radical. In what is called Public Art, this is a fundamental
trait which legitimizes the event as a philosophical category, namely through actions of shared
authorship and collaborative social processes. Relational Aesthetics. With art which remains in
the atelier or gallery, in the private circuit, as is the case with Nádia Duvall’s, such advancement
corresponds to a process of individual evolution, to the rhythm of the advances and setbacks of
a progressive understanding of the parameters and limitations of the action, where the
eagerness for freedom and meaning is expressed in a tendentiously emancipatory relationship
with the plastic matter. The search for a grace [shareable]. Regarding this first individual
exposition of Nádia Duvall’s, we are privileged to observe the unfolding of a destiny, harsh and
inevitable, as all other destinies. For Nádia, her part was to let happen upon her an artistic
project of re-foundation of the pleasure of plasticity [Plastik, in Joseph Beuys’ language]. I say
“happen upon her” because, as anyone who knows her might guess, it’s a set of works which,
despite being set by a mind and a hand, a body, in many moments in a deliberate and precise
way - Nádia is practically advanced in Martial Arts -, they still presuppose, at the same time and
in creative tension, a dimension of pulse, of automatism, of unconsciousness. This will make
them a dissimulated form of mysticism. Channels of a transpersonal subjectivity. In the
ESAD.CR, where the artist has just finished her studies, her work has been for a long time a
special case of conviction [obsession?], intemperance [self-destructiveness?], and beauty
[aesthetics?]. Her large format canvases foreshadow a process of literal inhabitancy of the
plastic matter by the artist’s body, implying the involvement of that whole body, as machine, in
the process of appropriating the pictorial praxis. It’s about warranting to the creative act a
process in which the mental focus and controlled movement are allied to youth’s idealism, to
implement a violent complete experience, which abdicates of commentaries and
contextualization. An evidence which translates an energy with an elevated degree of purity,
eminence. In ESAD.CR we, professors as well as colleagues, have had quotidian contact with
this organic visuality, configurations in which the plasticity of the artistic gesture is the result of a
solitary ritual – of a spectacularity that was more sensed than exposed [despite the many
performances that the artist regularly proposes]. Yet, even if the individual processuality of this
painting is before our own eyes as a dance of the gesture, it is still, above all else, in the end
result, as an objectified painting that the artist is interested in. More than the sharing of her
technique [whose experimental determinant aspects, related to chemical reactions, she
deliberately hides], it is a thing that sits there, that imposes itself, to be aesthetically enjoyed
through a specific device, of the pictorial kind.

Due to it not being about a proposition of a “personal world” with deliberate meanings, the
artistic gesture is, to an extent, the one of indifferentiation before an idea of authorship [and of
autonomy, as expression of interiority], and for that we are before a process to which
virtuousness is not in any kind of academic technique, but in conviction, in necessity and in the
delivery of a body to an art project. To the underlying investigation in that project. Still, it is
inherent to the work, which maintains a great distance to the search for empathy, as well, and
perhaps for that reason exactly, a political notion of publicity [in the sense of Arendt], the
affirmation in crescendo of an individual identity through the appropriation of the concept of art –
somewhere between the unconscious [and despotized] ‘hand’ of Pollock, and the cerebral
intellectual consistency of a Klein [both acknowledged by Nádia as references].
Looking at Nadia’s paintings, which inhabit a territory as vague as it is objective, it’s up to the
spectator to search for and find their own place. That place may anchor itself in different
paradigms of reception:
- To the advocates of processuality, the gesture is there, the performativity, a device of
individual emancipation, a sense of mission;
- To the supporters of the Beautiful as objectification of the creative act, it’s not easy to
remain indifferent to a grammar of happenstance which evokes surrealism as much as
dripping;
- To the lovers of minimalism, it would suffice to surprise, in the apparent randomness of
the fixed configurations, a nature in process, the experience of the total [accentuated by
the chromatic conciseness]:
- To the defenders of tansversatility, it is possible to recognize in the discourse of this
creator an openness, in the near future, to widen the scope of her work [Duvall plans to
take recourse, in the near of the future, of a collaboration with scientists in the fields of
Physics and Chemistry].
In any of these hypothetical type-positions towards Nádia Duvall’s work, stands out a common
value, the Truth. By way of the problematization of the relationship between body and work,
mind and form, the obstinate character of her search and the documental rigour that the artist
demands to include in her programme, such truth comes from a sense of the value of freedom.
A cultural value which, in its apparent self-confinement – to the materials and Painting habitus –,
becomes, for that very reason, better experienced and appropriated. The Truth as Poiesis, a
free poetic of the doing, in imponderability, and which presents itself as ambition and delivery,
displaying a therapeutic dimension [still Beuys], but for now it is not found mediated by stoic
serenity. This is an art that hides itself and reveals itself at the same time, inviting the public to
live it as a peculiar expression of the ephemeral. An event, private, but for all.

Gravidade e Graça

Even at this very moment, action, work, love, thought, the search for truth and beauty are creating certain realities which transcend the transitory nature of the individual. And the fact that this assertion has become trivial, that it has been put to use too often – sometimes to worst kind of ends – does not mean that it has stopped being true.
Henri Lefèbvre, Critique of Everyday Life [1947]

– para os advogados da processualidade, está lá o gesto, a performatividade, um dispositivo de emancipação individual, um sentido de missão;
– para os adeptos do Belo como objectificação do acto criativo, não é fácil ficar indiferente a uma gramática de acasos que tanto evoca o surrealismo como o dripping;
– para os amantes do minimalismo, bastaria surpreender na aparente aleatoriedade das configurações fixadas uma natureza em processo, a experiência do total [acentuada pela concisão cromática];
