"LIGHT OF THE NIGHT, NÁDIA DUVALL’S CREATION"

Art is a dream dreamt by the artist.
Anton Ehrenzweig
In a place where the shadow is twins with the unrevealed fire.
Herberto Helder

In the long years of my extensive career in art criticism, in visiting some of the world’s art capitals, New York, London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Brussels, Amsterdam and their great museums, from west to east, passing through Macau and China, in the labyrinth of my writing fostered by the artistic movements of the 20th Century and its masters, I’ve had the opportunity and privilege of personal dialogue with great artists like Tàpies, considered during his last stages of life as the greatest living painter, António Saura, Cícero Dias, Erró, Júlio Resend, Cargaleiro, Nadir Afonso, or Júlio Pomar, amongst many others.
Edifying the Imaginary Museum, in the wake of Malraux, the creatures and the colours, the lines of a reality alternative to the everyday disenchantment, the imaginary reality, the enchanted horizon of creation. Diving into the abysses of the unconscious in search of its laws, its secret order, listening to “the voices of silence” to transform them into the luminous and numinous flux of the word.
Rarely, in this long route, have I encountered the surprise, the originality, the creative force and the pulsing authenticity of young Nádia Duvall’s journey. To some of her references – Yves Klein (the implication of the body), Rothko (mysticism and spirituality), Pollock (gestuality and pulsation) and Helena Almeida (the mental, conceptual component) – I’ll add some that immediately occur to me: Tàpies, Frida Kahlo. Tàpies invented, in the mid 50s, the writing on the wall and a new vision of the medium and the everyday objects. Nádia Duvall creates, today, a writing on the water and born of the water, and a plastic medium to express and fixate her gestures, since the one that she inherited from centuries of western tradition didn’t satisfy her, and does not meet her need to find an equivalent to her underground impulses and luminous gestations.
No paint from a tube, no fabricated pencil is good or enough for her, simply because what she is after, her oldest obsessions, unmatched in the visible world, await to break the surface of consciousness, the alchemic conjunction of the spirit, hers, of the works and of a matter that doesn’t yet exist. This depends on a celebration and a gestation involving the light, the space, the shadows, her body, a skin of paint that Nádia herself has produced over the years, the magic of the colours, her veils, her mystery. And the water, mater and magister of an “oeuvre to the dark”, of an alchemy with different phases, from which we guess the calcination, the destruction of the differences, a blackness that is from the night of the soul and from the night of the world, the solution in the purified water and new solidification (rubedo), phase of the matter’s transformation, bringing with it the union of the opposites, “the peaceful coexistence of the opposites” and at last that that announces itself, marching secretly, of sublimation, “that corresponds to gold, sun colour, fullness of being, warmth and light.” (1)
The Spanish philosopher poet María Zambrano describes alchemy as “the eagerness of transmutating inert matter, or of extracting the acting and pure principle buried in it, humanely participating in the creation” (2). The analogy with an alchemic process is implied in Nádia Duvall’s art, in the transformation undergone in the process of creating a new matter, from the dissolution and solidification with the mediation of water and its symbolism. Ambivalent water, impure and pure, of which “ a few drops suffice to purify a world”, in the words of Gaston Bachlard quoted by Gilbert Durand that defines it as “the great and archetypal psychological image” (3). Water genetrix, equivalent to the original cosmic sea where rest all the potentialities of life, deep water of the unconsciousness in its demand for more light and a joy that is the secret halo of paradise. This first fusion in the breast of an intact unity and light, the water hides it and keeps it preciously. Unfathomable mystery of the spirit, its origins and justification. It took many centuries and ages of mighty evolution, from Lacaux’s first gesture, to medieval mysticism, to the great classical ambition of imitating Nature’s order and balance, to Mannerism’s cult of the mystery and inaccessible, to the whirlwind splendour of Baroque, to the oneiric roaming of Romanticism and Symbolism, to the convulsed appropriation of plastic reality and reality itself, exterior and interior, of the 20th Century, in its gradual pursuit of freedom of speech. It was necessary to go through Breton’s boldness of invoking human spirit’s abysms, and through Duchamp’s of claiming the power of chance and found object, the creative power of reality itself. Pollock’s explosive gestures were necessary, as well as the depuration of reality in abstraction and its negation in explosion of figurations and of new figurations, the raw art of the insane and the alienated, it was necessary to go through this millennial labyrinth with its losses and revelations.
Today, a new plastic language rises passionately, a language that denies and reinvents everything, starting with the raw material of water, as if it was the first morning. Claiming the power of the spirit’s creation turns everything that preceded this adventure into a clean slate, apparently, but it was the humus that allowed its flowering.
Nádia Duvall, with her experience of suffering, her journals of sketches and portraits, her disturbing heteronyms, her unusual biography, is sister to Frida kahlo, not just for that, but mostly because she was able to create an art of the feminine that is the deepest expression of that feminine, of the ability to give birth, to rip from the darkness the sleep of the matter transforming it into the exhilarating adventure of spirit.
Invoking in her work the series “Varnishes” by Tàpies, part of the exhibit I commissioned in 1991 in the Serralves and Gulbenkian foundations, and Frida Kahlo, the artist is most of all herself, in her young eagerness of creating a reality to her image, since most of her works are a kind of self-portrait. But these images are more than secret emanations of human interiority, the celebration of a wound, of a cleft that we secretly mean to reunite.
The thin layer of pain in contact with the water (of a pool in her atelier, which she considers the true “womb” in the origin of gestation of her works), takes on nuances and shades to fix itself on the glass, it’s medium, where later on harsh and invading forms are integrated. The artist, through half words or half sentences, as if discourse was dangerously ambiguous, speaks of “desire”, desire to unify the consciousness and the unconsciousness separated by that transparent wall of a matter pulled from nothing. A metaphor of the skin and a body present and absent, the unbearable lightness that appeals to the occurrence of consciousness.
Her own body is involved in the process, in the manipulation of the materials, complex and arduous, in its relation with the water that allows fixating “unfixable” images. And present also as a source of all metaphors, like a cocoon of shadows that awaited the flight of a dream butterfly. Body of pain, of incisions, impaled by shapes that rip through its innocence, its smoothness, its beauty. Shapes sculpted intimately blue that transform these pieces into paintings/object in a wise game of opacities and transparencies with veins and delicate nuances of colour, openings and tears, marks on the “skin” that extends itself and vibrates over the medium of glass, in it awakening life. A second life, unusual and palpable caress of the senses of the soul, a look inward from the secret night of the spirit, listening to the shadows, foreboding the oneiric blue of the dream, “divine spark buried in darkness” (4), indication of the most occult light, perfume of the absence that precedes splendour.
“Visgraat” (fish spine) is the title for this series. Nádia Duvall has found a language foreign to her own, Dutch, the harsh sounds that correspond to her expression of pain, her search for a medium for the suffering and perplexity. Fish spine, backbone, invader, always in a central and vertical position, a kind of founding axis of this nocturnal universe. In the plane of myth the axis of the world, “axis mundi”, provides meaning to the space allowing for a relationship with the Sacred (5). It was no accident that the artist discovered in the maritime kingdom this superb metaphor that was dictated to her by the occult grammar laws of the unconscious, in its deepest structures studied by Ehrenzweig (6). In this nocturnal and apparently chaotic space, the fish spine is not the anti “axis mundi”, as it could be perceived on first glance, but the cosmic axis, the true backbone of the oneiric deep ocean of dreams. An axis that symbolically, connecting human to nature, guarantees her not submerging into Chaos of the consciousness that has lost the key to symbolic and salvific knowledge, of which, nowadays, art, besides religion, is the only guardian. This powerful and touching axis, in the enigma and chance of its birth and shape, contains a proposal of its own nature, of unlocking the meaning of human trajectory, of which it possesses the key, only transmissible in the silence, music or in the poetry dormant in these creations.
Great creations, emanations, of the unconsciousness, of the body, of the unconsciousness’ body, of the unconscious body. And creation of a new body, unconsciousness turned into matter, immaterial matter, pure evanescence, loving gift of the spirit that desires its half, in consciousness of an announced fusion of knowledge, indicative of a quest that is that of the entire West, "Shared between an ecstatic-inspired pole and a rational-conscious pole" (7). To let us enjoy the glow of these disturbing images, born of the limbo of all desires.
From the dark the shadows return from a place that’s never been seen nor felt prior to the alchemy and loving fusion of dreams, matters and a fire hidden in the undergrounds of water. Capricious membranes, veils of fallen angels from a paradise in migration towards the infinite ravings of the night.
From a lake, or an ocean of feeble vibrations, as feeble as silence, only a fragile silence illuminated by the sounds of a piano playing in mute, rumouring the violence of an ancient suffering and that rises through the veins, rises to the blood and transforms into a languid volcano, spreading in the veins of the water, butterfly wings born of wing and music’s whispers. Wings, crescendo, submerged crescent moons, tearing through the darkness with the audacity of columns, not temples, but of a merely interior time, prior to light, and that announces it. Like a promised dawn, blue murmur amidst the debris, as if anything was still possible, in the light, transparent fringe of a nameless cloak, winged substance of a curtain that hides and reveals the absolute or the nothing.
From mystery to mystery, layer to layer, from shadow to dream, the light of melancholy brightens the dark in obscure scintillations, like sighs or screams. Portraits, pure interior alchemy, in the marriage of colour, of the shape and of minimal or great surfaces, portraits on glass, fragile and dense, wounds, magical labyrinths, intimate fires sizzling whispers, hurts and wonders, of the night, of the absence, labyrinths like the hair of a tree that grew into the bowels of the earth, its threads babbling the words of an alphabet without any equal.
Gold, spasms in the void, lilacs, flowers in the absence and a purple aurora borealis of the soul.
The soul, revealing its shadow, its light magically hidden in the veils of steps that have long since been lost in virgin, unexplored forests. Forests of our discontent, of a civilization that denied its eve of water.
From the darkness, from the link with music, from the silence tore by the lightning of the ancestral night, these wings navigate, these membranes violated by the suffering and hurt of being alive. They sail to the winds of astral space, where we are the comets, flowers without garden. New space, new matter, new language for a new expression of human. No psychologism can explain this journey, built to the scale of a medium larger than our own. It’s about reinventing the human, once again, of sketching a new trajectory, starting from the suffering that being born necessarily implies, the mark of every great artist, like Roland Penrose wrote about Tàpies. A human in sync with the Cosmos, born of the womb of water metaphors, in migration towards other territories of the spirit in eclipse, promise of gold, of a sun, its true destiny.

Anton Ehrenzweig
Num lugar onde a sombra é gémea do fogo irrevelado
Herberto Helder

Grandes criações, emanações, do inconsciente, do corpo, do corpo do inconsciente, do inconsciente do corpo.
